TB Champions Share Inspiring Recovery Stories to Raise Awareness
Shimla, April 10, 2025: Deputy Commissioner of Shimla, Anupam Kashyap, emphasized that tuberculosis (TB) is a communicable disease, but it is completely curable with timely diagnosis, regular medication, and a nutritious diet. Speaking at an interaction with TB Champions of the district, he highlighted the importance of raising awareness, particularly in rural areas, and encouraged survivors to share their personal journeys to inspire others.
The TB Champions, who have battled and overcome the disease, shared stories of resilience and recovery. From cases of spinal TB and intestinal TB to repeated infections, survivors like advocate Sourav Ratan and Krishna Sharma emphasized the significance of early diagnosis, consistent treatment, and dietary care. Several champions also recounted the social stigma they faced, calling for empathy and support for TB patients.
DC Kashyap urged the champions to spread awareness among school children and youth, who can play a vital role in eradicating TB from society. He also appealed to the public to refrain from discriminating against TB patients, as the infection risk significantly drops after 15 days of treatment.
District TB Officer Dr. Vineet Lakhanpal informed that 180 out of a target of 450 TB Champions have been trained so far. He also highlighted ongoing screening efforts for latent TB and the role of improved immunity, nutrition, and mental well-being in prevention.
The World Health Partner’s Impact India Project, led by Dr. Aparna and Vikramjeet, is supporting the TB-Free Panchayat initiative, training village heads and TB survivors to act as community advocates.
