Snowfall likely on X’mas and New Year at high reaches of HP

Shimla, Dec 21- Tourists who desire to visit the hill state on Christmas and the New Year may be in for a treat as India Meterogical Department(IMD) forecast rain or snowfall on December 25 at the high altitude areas of Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, In Kinnaur and Kullu district.
Issuing Weekly forecast local Spokesperson of IMD said that there are chances of light rainfall or snowfall in the high hill of Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Kullu from late night of December 25 onwards.
According to forecast issued by Weatherradar inclement weather may prevail on December 25 and December 26. The state is likely to witness rain or snowfall in a few places on January 1 and 2 respectively. Chances of white Christmas and New year’s eve is bleak in major tourist destination baring Manali of Kullu, Kaza and Keylong of Lahaul-Spiti.
Moderate to dense fog is likely to occur at isolated pockets in low hills and plains of the state and cold wave with dry weather conditions would continue for the next 3 days. Minimum temperature plummet to season’s lowest as Keylong shivered at minus 7.4 degree Celsius, Kukumseri of Lahual recorded minus 8, Kaza minus 12, Kalpa minus 3.4, Manali minus 0.4, Solan and Mandi zero degree, Una 3.4, Shimla 4, Kangra 4.6, Chamba 2.6, Hamirpur 2.5 , Bilaspur 5, Dalhousie 4, Kufri 3, and Dharmshala 6 degrees. Visibility reduced to 50 meters due to dense fog at Bilaspur and shallow fog was also witnessed at Mandi town.
Water pipe lines were reported to have burst at a few places after the Mercury plunged down below freezing point. Thick layer of frost also appeared at the snowline areas. Coldwave intensified in the wee hours and night as Minimum temperature plummet under subzero.
Natural Ice Skating rink at Shimla and Kaza already recorded many sessions of ice skating during both morning and evening time.
