Silence Speaks: Manali Villages Begin 42-Day Devotional Retreat from Makar Sankranti
1 min readManali, Jan 13
The villages in the Upper Valley of Manali, including Simmsa and Goshal, begin a unique religious tradition on Makar Sankranti, which lasts for 42 days. During this period, local residents follow strict dev instructions that involve refraining from any entertainment activities, such as using televisions, radios, and DJ equipment. The ban also extends to certain agricultural activities, especially digging work in fields.
The tradition marks the time when local deities, including Kanchan Nag, Vyas, and Gautam Rishi, begin their meditation, requiring a peaceful environment. As part of the custom, the temple doors are closed on Makar Sankranti, and after 42 days, during the Fagli festival, the deities are believed to return from their spiritual journey and make predictions for the coming year. The predictions are based on materials found in the offerings placed on the deities’ statues.
