Shimla Grapples with Water Crisis: New Tankers Deployed to Aid Residents

Shimla, June 11: As the summer heat peaks in Shimla, residents are facing significant water shortages. To address the issue, the Shimla Jal Prabandhan has started water supply on alternate days. Despite this, the demand for water tankers has increased, with approximately 50 tankers needed daily. Due to narrow roads, larger tankers cannot reach certain areas, prompting the municipal corporation to add two small tankers to its fleet, bringing the total to three small tankers.
On Tuesday, MLA Harish Janartha and Mayor Surender Chauhan flagged off the two new small tankers. Janartha stated that while water shortages are common in Shimla during summer, this year’s issue hasn’t reached critical levels. Currently, water is supplied every third day. The trial of small tankers is underway, and more may be added if successful. Regarding the 10% hike in water bills, he mentioned it was part of an agreement with the World Bank made by the previous government, with a review planned after the project’s completion in about 18 months.
Mayor Chauhan highlighted efforts to enhance water resources in Shimla, including purchasing two small tankers to navigate narrow roads. Additionally, the municipal corporation is renovating old step wells and constructing new water tanks around the city to improve water storage and alleviate the crisis.
