Today marked the culmination of a pioneering training program focused on the fundamentals of bird and nature watching in Shimla. Initiated on April 7th, 2024, the program was orchestrated by Sajid, Rajat, Kamal, Shivam, and Abhinav from Shimla, under the guidance of Mrs. Anchal Sondhi from Titli Trust, Uttarakhand, and Mrs. Aarti Gupta, formerly associated with WWF. The initiative received invaluable support from Mr. Shahnawaz, the D.F.O of the Wildlife Division in Shimla, and the Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh.
The primary objective of the program was to foster an interest in nature among local youths in Himachal Pradesh, nurturing them into naturalists and nature guides. Conducted over three days, the training unfolded within the serene environs of the Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary.
Participants were equipped with essential skills such as utilizing binoculars and field guide books to identify various bird species based on their physical characteristics, habitats, and calls. Additionally, the program aimed to raise awareness about the significance of such tourism-related activities in the hill state.
A noteworthy outcome of the training was the sighting of a total of 45 different bird species, including some exceptionally rare ones like the White Brown Shrike-Babbler, Blue-throated Flycatcher, and the Koklass.
