The renowned author S.R. Harnot’s story “Cats Talk” has been included in the B.A. curriculum of Secket Autonomous College, affiliated with Mumbai University. The story is part of a syllabus that features works by many esteemed authors from across the country.
Originally published in 2002, “Cats Talk” gained significant attention when Harnot, the author, participated in a discussion about it. Since then, the story has remained a topic of discussion in the Hindi literary world. Vandana Agrahari, a student at Mumbai University, is pursuing her Ph.D. in Harnot’s literature.
The story “Cats Talk” is part of Harnot’s acclaimed story collection “Darosh and Other Stories,” published by Aadhar Prakashan in 2002. The collection received widespread praise from critics and readers alike. It won the 2003 Indu Sharma International Short Story Award, and Harnot also received the Himachal Pradesh Sahitya Akademi Award. The story has been translated into several languages.
Subsequently, a book of translations titled “Cat’s Talk,” featuring translations of 14 English stories by Harnot, was published by Cambridge Scholar Press, London. The editing for this book was done by eminent scholar and critic Prof. Meenakshi F. Paul and Dr. Khem Raj Sharma. The story “Cats Speak” has been performed on various theatrical stages as well.
Before this, Harnot’s stories have been part of the B.A. and M.A. curricula of many universities, including Himachal Pradesh University, and various schools in Kerala. Harnot has earned over 31 M.Phil. degrees and nearly 15 Ph.D. degrees for his literary works. This year, students at Allahabad University, Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa, and Lucknow University have registered for Ph.D. research on Harnot’s literature.
Harnot is an author whose every book sparks discussions. His novel, recently published by Vani Prakashan Delhi, has also received significant attention. Its second edition was published within the same year.
Harnot expressed his gratitude to the selection committee and especially to Dr. Hooab Nath Singh, the Head of the Hindi Department at Mumbai University, for including his story in the curriculum.
