In a fiery response to Jai Ram Thakur, Education Minister Rohit Thakur criticized the Leader of Opposition (LoP) for turning the matter of Sardar Patel University (SPU) in Mandi into a political game. He accused the LoP of jeopardizing the futures of thousands of students solely to satisfy his ego. Thakur contended that the previous BJP government had opened the university in a college building without adequate planning for quality education. There were no classroom facilities, and the university struggled to conduct examinations. According to Rohit Thakur, Jai Ram Thakur initiated this university mainly for political gain, ultimately affecting students.

In a press statement released, the Education Minister highlighted the deficiencies at SPU, including a lack of teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as inadequate facilities for students. Consequently, affiliated colleges have requested to be linked with Himachal Pradesh University to provide better educational opportunities. Himachal Pradesh University boasts more than 500 teaching staff and sufficient non-teaching staff.

Rohit Thakur clarified that the current state government had no intention of shutting down Sardar Patel University. He criticized the LoP for manipulating regional sentiments to gain an edge in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Thakur emphasized that it would have been wiser for Jai Ram Thakur to develop the university’s infrastructure before its establishment, rather than prioritizing political goals over students’ futures.

The Education Minister accused the LoP of perpetuating a politics of deceit, even during his time in power. He argued that by diverting attention to the SPU issue, Jai Ram Thakur was attempting to distract the people, but the residents of Himachal Pradesh were well aware of the BJP’s political tactics.
