Road accidents are adversely affecting people’s faces, with Shimla Zone alone witnessing 250 cases of facial injuries annually. These incidents mainly occur in districts such as Shimla, Kinnaur, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi, among others. Shockingly, 25% of these cases require significant surgical intervention, as revealed by a study conducted by the State Dental College.

Dr. Yogesh Bharadwaj, the President of the State Chapter of the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India, shared this information. He stated that most accidents occur due to non-compliance with traffic rules, impacting the lives of those involved. Although, Dr. Bharadwaj mentioned that in the majority of cases, facial injuries are corrected through surgical procedures.

In major surgeries, lasting from seven to eight hours, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the State Dental College treated 316 patients with facial injuries in 2018. Out of these, 78 underwent major operations, accounting for 24%. In 2021, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, there were fewer cases due to reduced vehicular movement. However, in 2022, the numbers increased to 256 cases, with 64 undergoing major surgery (25%), and 192 undergoing minor surgical procedures. In 2023, there were 278 cases, with 67 requiring major surgery (24%) and 211 undergoing minor surgery.

Dr. Yogesh Bharadwaj emphasized the importance of following traffic rules during the Road Safety Week organized from January 11 to 17. He highlighted that 25% of facial injuries need major surgical intervention and expressed concern over the emotional and psychological impact of road accidents on individuals. Dr. Bharadwaj, along with Dr. Rangila Rao, advised that immediate care following an accident, known as the “Golden Hour,” is crucial. They recommended placing the patient in a lateral position and using a stretcher while avoiding water intake. Applying pressure to wounds to control bleeding and lifting the legs, shoulders, and neck simultaneously are essential. Moreover, they emphasized the importance of wearing helmets, seat belts, and avoiding phone usage while driving to prevent accidents.
