Hamirpur, February 26: A retired teacher from Bairi Brahmna village in Bhoranj subdivision has emerged as an inspiring example of natural farming success. Sheela Devi shifted from conventional crops to chemical-free potato cultivation using only organic manure and locally prepared inputs. Starting with just 5 kilograms of seed potatoes, she produced around 4.5 quintals in her first attempt and later expanded cultivation, achieving several quintals of yield from nearly one bigha of land without chemical fertilisers or irrigation support.
Encouraged by the state government’s push for natural farming and higher procurement prices for crops like maize, wheat, and turmeric, Sheela Devi said the method reduces costs while ensuring safe and healthy produce. Her success has motivated other farmers in the area to adopt sustainable farming practices.
