Renowned Hindi Writer S.R. Harnot Engages with Students at Central University of Punjab

May 24, 2024 (Bathinda) – The Hindi Department at Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, under the patronage of esteemed Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra Prasad Tiwari, hosted a special interactive event titled ‘Dialogue with the Author’ featuring eminent contemporary Hindi fiction writer S.R. Harnot. During this event, Harnot was honored by the department for his contributions to Hindi literature.
S.R. Harnot is celebrated for his acclaimed novels “Hidimb” and “Nadi Rang Jaisi Ladki” and his notable short stories such as “Darosh,” “Jeenakathi,” “Hakwayi,” “Aabhi,” “Nadi Gayab Hai,” “Log Nahin Jaante The Ke Unke Pahad Khatre Mein Hain,” “Litton Block Gir Raha Hai,” “Mitti Ke Log,” “Billiyan Batiyati Hain,” “Maa Padhti Hai,” “Bhagadevi Ka Chai Ghar,” and “Keelen.” His work holds a significant place in contemporary Hindi fiction, and various universities across India have conducted and continue to conduct extensive research on his stories. Dr. Sen elaborated that S.R. Harnot, honored with numerous literary awards, has seen his stories translated into various Indian and foreign languages. Additionally, several films have been made based on his stories. At Guru Gobind Singh University in Talwandi Sabo, a research scholar has completed her PhD on his work, while four students at Central University have written dissertations, and one student is currently pursuing a PhD. Dr. Sen highlighted that in the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, Harnot’s stories “Hakwayi” and “Patthar Ka Khel” are part of the MA and PhD curricula.
During the interaction, S.R. Harnot discussed the background and creative process of his stories, inspiring students to engage in story writing. He spoke in-depth about the themes and creation of his stories such as “Aabhi,” “Darosh,” “Keelen,” “Nadi Rang Jaisi Ladki,” and “Hidimb,” explaining their societal impact. Harnot emphasized the importance of a writer’s creative integrity and social commitment, highlighting the writer’s responsibility towards society. Following his talk, students asked numerous questions, to which Harnot provided insightful answers, presenting new dimensions for research. After the session, a special film titled “Keel,” based on Harnot’s story “Keelen” and directed by young actor Aryan Harnot, was screened.
The program commenced with a formal welcome by Associate Professor Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, who introduced the author. Department Head Prof. Rajendra Sen, in his presidential address, shed light on Harnot’s diverse literary concerns, recognizing him as a vigilant writer sensitive to his surroundings. Prof. Sen highlighted Harnot’s efforts in depicting the local culture of Himachal Pradesh, the increasing environmental pollution in the mountainous regions, the struggles of women, and the conditions of marginalized communities in his writings. He concluded by expressing gratitude towards S.R. Harnot and all attendees. The event was attended by Dr. Deepak Kumar Pandey, Dr. Amit Kumar Singh Kushwaha, Dr. Sameer, Dr. Vinod Arya, and research scholars and students of the department.
