Shimla, February 28: A political storm has erupted in Himachal Pradesh as six rebel Congress legislators face disqualification under the Anti-Defection Law. A petition challenging their membership has been submitted before the Assembly Speaker. The Speaker swiftly issued notices to the MLAs, initiating an immediate hearing.
The rebel MLAs, however, through their legal representatives, argued that a minimum of seven days should have been given for them to respond. Nevertheless, Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania clarified in media interactions that orders would be issued promptly.
The political upheaval unfolded after the issuance of a whip by the ruling party. The rebel legislators arrived in the assembly around noon, but left before the arrival of the Assembly Speaker, violating the whip. Now the question arises regarding the potential consequences if these legislators are disqualified. Political analysts suggest that such a move might trigger by-elections in the six assembly constituencies.
If the Assembly Speaker decides to cancel the membership of the rebel MLAs, they may explore legal options. However, the possibility of by-elections in conjunction with the Lok Sabha polls cannot be ruled out.
In a parallel development, the budget was eventually passed. During the budget proceedings, 10 BJP members were present in the House, but they also left. Prior to this, Satpal Satti stated that the expulsion of 15 members was orchestrated to save the government. Despite the absence of 25 BJP, 6 rebel Congress, and 3 independent members, the budget was successfully passed.
The Congress, facing defeat in the Rajya Sabha, employed two political strategies during the budget session, including the use of the whip and the expulsion of 15 legislators. The outcome has left political observers speculating about the future dynamics and possible repercussions in Himachal Pradesh politics.
