“Power Must Serve Change, Not Revenge”: Jairam Thakur Welcomes Court Relief

Kullu, April 10: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur welcomed the court’s decision restoring pension benefits to Congress rebel MLAs, calling it a “victory of justice” and a setback to what he described as “revenge-driven governance.”
Addressing the media in Kullu, Thakur alleged that the Sukhu-led government has repeatedly taken unconstitutional decisions in the name of “system change,” many of which have been struck down by courts. Referring to the recent judgment, he said the court’s observation that “laws are meant for the future, not for revenge” reflects on the government’s approach.
Thakur said the BJP had earlier urged the Speaker in the Assembly to safeguard the dignity of the House and avoid passing laws driven by political vendetta. “A law that cannot stand constitutional scrutiny undermines the credibility of the Assembly itself,” he remarked.
He further alleged that several policy decisions of the current government have failed legal scrutiny, leading to repeated setbacks in courts. Citing the Panchayat election issue, he claimed the government has faced multiple judicial reprimands.
Calling for a shift in approach, Thakur urged Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to focus on governance and public welfare rather than political retaliation. He said governance should be guided by constitutional principles and long-term public interest.
