New Delhi, August 24 – Speaking at the Presiding Officers’ Conference hosted by the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Speaker of Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Kuldeep Singh Pathania, hailed Vitthalbhai Patel as not only a great freedom fighter but also a visionary leader who strengthened India’s legislative institutions.
The two-day conference, inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, was organized to mark the centenary of Vitthalbhai Patel’s election as the first Chairman of the Central Assembly and also the centenary of Delhi Legislative Assembly. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lt. Governor Vijay Saxena, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta also addressed the gathering.
Pathania highlighted Patel’s role in transforming the colonial legislature into a platform of Indian self-expression and political assertion. He recalled how Patel defeated a British nominee by two votes to become the first elected Chairman of the Council Chamber in 1925, which also marked the beginning of summer sessions of the Central Assembly in Shimla.
He praised Patel’s legal acumen, commitment to constitutional principles, and efforts in strengthening parliamentary practices, including advocating for a separate secretariat and enhancing members’ rights.
Himachal Assembly Deputy Speaker Vinay Kumar and Secretary Yashpal Sharma were also present at the conference.
