New Suspension Bridge Replaces 100-Year-Old Collapsed Lal Bridge Over Beas River

2 min read

Mandi, September 18: Following the collapse of the 100-year-old Lal Bridge in the Pandoh market, the construction of a parallel suspension bridge has been completed. The newly constructed suspension bridge, which cost 6 lakh rupees and took a month to build, is now ready for public use. It will connect the Drang and Mandi Sadar assembly constituencies.

The suspension bridge has a capacity to bear a weight of 90 kilograms. People can also ride on it to cross the Beas River. However, it is important for individuals to avoid overloading the bridge with a weight exceeding 90 kilograms. While the bridge has been constructed, there is no railing at the points where people descend and ascend, which poses a risk of falling for those using the suspension bridge. Locals have requested the installation of railings for safety purposes.

Vinod Rana, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department Thalout Division, mentioned that the bridge has been readied for use. This bridge is similar to other suspension bridges built over the Beas River. However, people need to be cautious not to exceed the weight limit. Any remaining issues will also be addressed soon.

Meanwhile, residents of Pandoh and the Badar area are eagerly waiting for a bigger and permanent bridge. The economic situation of the Pandoh market has been affected due to the collapse of the old bridge, and people from nearly a dozen panchayats in the Badar area have to travel an additional five kilometers to reach Pandoh. They have urged the government to release funds promptly for the construction of a new bridge in Pandoh and complete the work as soon as possible.
