Kullu, August 31: Displaying exemplary courage and compassion, cadets of 1 HP Air Squadron NCC carried out a daring rescue operation during a devastating landslide in Kokser, Lahaul district.
Amid heavy rainfall and falling debris, five cadets — LFC Atul Kaushal, LFC Rohit, Cadet Naresh, Cadet Pankaj, and Cadet Kavyansh — crossed a dangerously crowded bridge to escort stranded citizens and tourists, including elderly women and children, to safety. Their swift and selfless action drew appreciation from locals and security personnel alike.
The cadets were returning from the Surya Spiti Marathon and Surya Dronacharya Run, organized by the Indian Army, when roadblocks forced them to halt at Kokser Transit Camp and CPWD Guest House. Their immediate response not only averted tragedy but also reflected the discipline, training, and spirit of service inculcated in NCC.
The rescue team included a 28-member contingent with 11 girl cadets, guided by GCI Pooja, Sergeant Mandeep, Corporal Sahil, and Home Guard Gulshan. Cadet Shivangi Thakur brought laurels by securing second place in the Women’s 10 km category, winning a cash prize of ₹10,000. Cadet Jitendra Kumar served as overall in-charge, ensuring seamless coordination and discipline.
Setting a powerful example, Commanding Officer Wing Commander Kunal Sharma completed the challenging 79 km Spiti Ultra Challenge from Kunzum La Pass to Kaza, symbolizing 79 years of Indian independence, before joining the cadets in the marathon.
