Driven by his deep passion for music, renowned Irish guitarist Graham Deunes has arrived at Gurukul Dharech to learn the art of tabla. He is receiving training under celebrated Hindustani classical tabla exponent Vikram Gandharva, marking a unique confluence of Indian and Irish musical traditions.
Notably, Graham Deunes has been associated with Vikram Gandharva for several years through online classes. His current visit to India allows him to experience the traditional Gurukul system firsthand, immersing himself in Indian classical music while residing and learning within this age-old pedagogical tradition. Alongside his musical journey, he is also enjoying the serene natural beauty surrounding Dharech.
Sharing insights, Vikram Gandharva stated that Graham Deunes’ wife is a renowned singer in Ireland and currently serves as the President of the Irish Music Artists Association. The couple has been actively organizing Irish music concerts and participating in international cultural platforms for many years.
During his stay in India, Graham Deunes will also conduct guitar training workshops at the Vikram Gandharva Music School, Baltana, Chandigarh, where a large number of children are expected to participate. These workshops will provide students with a unique opportunity to understand the fusion of Western guitar techniques with Indian rhythm and tempo.
It is noteworthy that Gurukul Dharech, established by Vikram Gandharva, hosts annual Tabla Summer and Winter Camps, attracting students from across India and abroad. Today, the Gurukul is emerging as a significant international center of Indian rhythmic traditions, fostering cultural exchange and strengthening musical ties between India and the world.
