Hamirpur, Oct 6 – The Wide life wing of the Himachal Pradesh Forests Department has decided to take up the work of counting monkeys in the state afresh.

This follows the reports that the number of monkeys has come down sharply in the state and that is a matter of great concern for all.

State’s Principal Chief Conservator (Wildlife) Rajeev Kumar said in the study of the year 2019, there was a decrease in the number of monkeys.

At present, the department is conducting a study from the agency about the dwindling number of monkeys in the state, he said.
Notably, after the terror of monkeys in the state, many farmers had left the traditional occupation of farming. Many farmers’ fields are lying barren for years. The biggest reason behind this is that wild animals, especially monkeys have started destroying crops. In the year 2019, there was talk of a decrease in the number of monkeys in the census of monkeys.

A study has to be done in this direction. Vanar Sena (Monkey Brigade) has been destroying agricultural and horticultural crops in rural areas.

He said according to the study of 2019, the number of monkeys in the state was 1, 36,443 as against 205167 in 2015, thereby showing a decrease of 33.5 per cent.

Though monkeys create hardship for the people and their crops yet they are also worshipped being known as the Army of Lord Hanuman, one of the leading Hindu Deities.
