Middle School in Upmandal Kotli Faces Danger Due to Heavy Monsoon Rains

Mandi, August 28: Due to incessant heavy rainfall, the Middle School in Kotli, a part of the sub-division, is now under the threat of landslides. The building and the surrounding land have started sinking, with cracks as wide as one and a half to two feet appearing. Large crevices have also formed in the ground behind the building. These cracks were observed on Saturday, following which higher authorities were informed.

Local village council members and revenue officials, who visited the site, took the decision to ensure the safety of the children. Currently, the students are being taught in the school’s kitchen building, which remains safe. The two-story building has been completely evacuated. The present situation has 36 children receiving education in the school.

Gram Panchayat Tarnoh’s head, Anamika Thakur, mentioned that upon receiving information, she reached the site and made arrangements for the children to sit in a safe place. Deputy Head, Deep Kumar Sharma, stated that not only the school but also other houses in the area and the water department’s tanks are under threat. Efforts are being made to mitigate or prevent this danger.

Director of Elementary Education, Amar Nath Rana, explained that he has directed the department’s team to assess the situation on-site and report back. Presently, the children are being kept safe, and decisions for the future will be made based on the forthcoming report from the assessment team.
