Lift safety norms to be imposed strictly within public and private premises

In order to enhance the public safety and security, besides cultivating an element of accountability, the Lift Safety Norms, which includes approval and obtaining license has been made mandatory for all types of lifts, both within public and private premises.

Giving this information here today, Secretary Public Works, Abhishekh Jain stated that the Himachal Pradesh Lift Act, promulgated in 2009, mandates that every owner of a place intending to install a lift shall apply for permission within one month after completion and a license to operate the same. There was limited awareness amongst the public about the HP Lift Safety Act and there were only 1000 lifts registered Statewide till 31st August 2024, as compared to 1900 as of today.

It was under the directions of the Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who emphasized for developing an online portal for lift approval and other registration and licensing issues, so as to ensure the safety and security of the people besides to instill confidence about the safety in the people using such lifts.

Sh. Jain stated that those who intend to set up lift in their premises can apply online on edistrict.hp.gov.in. and further go on citizen portal to get themselves registered. He stated that now the registration, permission and renewal has been made online besides the fee can also be deposited through the payment gateway to register for setting up the Lift.

As the Chief Minister has directed to impart clear instructions to accord highest priority to the public safety and security, a provision has been made for inspections of the Lifts from time to time. He stated that Chief Minister opined that the economy of the State depends on tourism and by ensuring proper Lift Safety norms will add to the economy by posing confidence amongst the tourists as well. Sh. Jain said that till June 2025, a total of 3500 inspections have been made as compared to 750 till last August. The Acts also mandates to display a copy of registration and license inside the Lifts, he remarked.
