Legal Aid Clinic, HPNLU, Organizes an Insightful Webinar on “Financial Fraud in the Digital Era”

The Legal Aid Clinic (LAC) of Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla, under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, organized an insightful webinar under its Vidhi Vimarsh initiative on the theme “Financial Frauds in the Digital Era.” The session was addressed by Mr. Varun Pathak, Partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. and an alumnus of the London School of Economics.
The webinar witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 150 attendees across the country. Mr. Pathak provided an in-depth understanding of the evolving landscape of digital financial crime, distinguishing the complexity of contemporary cyber offenses from traditional forms of crime. He elaborated on critical issues such as challenges in crime identification, FIR registration, investigation processes, law enforcement limitations, compliance gaps, cyber espionage, and the role of VPNs in masking criminal activity.
The speaker also discussed the potential of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP Act), the use of AI-driven protection tools, the importance of judicial training for enhancing accountability, and the remedies and compensation mechanisms available to victims of cyber fraud.
The session concluded with a lively interaction, during which participants sought guidance on legal remedies, preventive strategies, and procedural aspects related to reporting and addressing digital financial fraud. The webinar was successfully organized by the Legal Aid Clinic, HPNLU, under the guidance of Dr. Chandreshwari Minhas, Chairperson of the Legal Aid Clinic, and Dr. Ruchi Gupta, Faculty Convenor.
