Drug menace, brutal murder and rising crime expose administrative failure
Shimla:
BJP State Vice President and former Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Vipin Singh Parmar on Sunday expressed serious concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, alleging that under the Congress government the situation has gone completely out of control.
Referring to recent reports of mysterious deaths in private de-addiction centres, Parmar said the issue has raised serious questions about the functioning and monitoring of such institutions in the state. According to reports, the State Narcotics Control Board has received around 10 to 12 complaints from across Himachal Pradesh regarding irregularities and suspicious deaths in private rehabilitation centres, prompting authorities to initiate an inquiry.
Parmar said that while the government claims to be taking strict action against drug abuse, the ground reality reflects a worrying trend. He pointed out that police records indicate seizures of more than 130 grams of heroin and about 117 grams of charas in recent operations, highlighting the continuing spread of narcotics in the state.
The BJP leader also referred to the brutal killing of a shepherd in Bilaspur district, where the victim was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon following a dispute over financial transactions. He said such incidents have created fear among ordinary citizens and raised concerns over public safety in rural areas.
Parmar further noted that in the Makhnunmajra firing case, the main accused remains absconding even after more than two weeks, which he said reflects poorly on the effectiveness of the state’s policing and investigative mechanisms.
Taking a swipe at the state government, Parmar said the situation in Himachal Pradesh appears to reflect the proverb “When the rulers sleep, criminals wake up.” He alleged that weak political will and administrative complacency have emboldened criminal elements across the state.
He urged the Congress government to take immediate and decisive measures to strengthen law enforcement and ensure the safety of citizens. Parmar said the BJP will continue to raise the issue and hold the government accountable for maintaining peace and law and order in the state.
