Langar to Be Served on Leaf Plates at Sankat Mochan Temple from September 1
2 min readShimla, August 23, 2024: After the successful implementation of serving langar on leaf plates at the historic Taradevi Temple, the district administration has decided to extend this initiative to the Sankat Mochan Temple. Starting from September 1, 2024, devotees at the Sankat Mochan Temple will be served langar on eco-friendly leaf plates. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap announced this initiative, stating that it is part of a broader plan to implement the use of leaf plates in all district temples.
The responsibility of producing these plates has been assigned to the Saksham Cluster Level Federation, Basantpur, under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and managed by the District Rural Development Agency. The Federation has been asked to prepare 4,000 leaf plates for the Sankat Mochan Temple every Friday, following the successful delivery of 18,000 plates to the Taradevi Temple since July 14, 2024.
This initiative is not only aimed at promoting environmental sustainability but also at strengthening the rural economy by providing employment opportunities to women involved in the production of these plates. The Federation comprises 2,942 women who have been trained in various aspects of leaf plate production, including size, finishing, and quality control.
The Federation has reported a significant increase in demand for leaf plates in the surrounding areas for weddings and other ceremonies. They have also begun receiving advance orders for the upcoming Navratri and Shraddh periods.
In addition to leaf plates, the Federation operates a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) named Rustik Village in Basantpur, which produces a variety of products. Over 450 women are involved in producing items such as cold-pressed oil, desi ghee, flour, animal feed, and pickles, along with their packaging and labeling. These products are sold at major fairs, through Him Ira shops, and online platforms.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Verma, PO DRDA Kirti Chandel, and other Federation members were also present during the announcement.
