Promoting Earthquake-Resistant Construction

Arki, September 20, – Dr. Saurav Kumar and Dr. Tanmay Gupta, esteemed members of the Department of Civil Engineering at Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT), Solan, made a significant impact at the recently held Arki Sayer Mela. Organized in collaboration with the local community, this event focused on raising awareness about earthquake-resistant building practices.

The event was graced by the presence of Yaduvendra Paul, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Arki, who personally invited the JUIT faculties to participate in the mela. Their expertise in earthquake-resistant construction was highly sought after for the occasion.

Dr. Tanmay Gupta took the opportunity to enlighten local masons and construction workers about various aspects of earthquake-resistant construction. He emphasized the significance of different brick bonds, such as Flemish Bond, English Bond, and Rat Trap Bond, and how they play a crucial role in confined masonry construction. Dr. Tanmay Gupta even provided practical demonstrations to illustrate these concepts, making it easier for the local audience to grasp.

Dr. Saurav Kumar, during his presentation, shed light on various codal recommendations and best practices for earthquake-resistant constructions. His informative session covered essential topics like the importance of the 135-degree hook in vertical stirrups and the critical aspects of anchorage and bond length in earthquake construction practices. The faculties welcomed numerous queries from the local attendees, patiently answering and clarifying doubts to ensure a comprehensive understanding.

Impressed by the valuable contributions of Dr. Saurav Kumar and Dr. Tanmay Gupta, SDM Arki expressed his gratitude for their efforts.
