Jairam Thakur Visits Disaster-Hit Lahaul, Slams Govt Over Neglect

1 min read

Lahaul, September 24 – Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur visited disaster-affected areas of Lahaul-Spiti, meeting families in Kelong, Lindoor, Halin, Mayar Valley, Udaipur Valley, and other villages. He expressed solidarity with locals, highlighting severe crop losses as vegetables rotted in fields due to blocked roads, raising the risk of epidemics.

Thakur accused the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government of turning a blind eye to the crisis, despite the Centre releasing over ₹5,500 crore for disaster relief and an additional ₹1,500 crore special package announced by PM Modi. He alleged that funds meant for rehabilitation were being diverted elsewhere, leaving victims helpless.

He warned that villages like Lindoor and Halin face existential threats, with homes and farmlands collapsing, urging immediate government intervention. “If today’s government does not help, BJP will ensure relief when it returns to power,” he said.

The LoP also criticized the Congress govt for increasing cement prices by adding AGT despite GST cuts under Modi, calling it anti-people. Raising another issue, he questioned why HPTDC employees have not received their salaries yet, despite the corporation claiming profits.

Party leaders including Siddharthan, former MLA Ravi Thakur, spokesperson Akhilesh Kapoor, and Suresh Sharma accompanied him during the visit.
