1 min readShimla, August 31, 2024: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition, Jairam Thakur, has sharply criticized the Sukhu government, accusing it of mortgaging employees’ General Provident Fund (GPF) to secure loans. He claimed that in just 18 months, the government has borrowed over ₹24,000 crores, pushing the state’s debt close to ₹1 lakh crores by the end of the year. Thakur expressed concerns over directives allegedly issued to delay the payment of salaries and pensions, which could severely disrupt the financial planning of employees. He also highlighted the government’s contradictory approach, citing the increase in honorariums for certain appointees while claiming financial distress. Thakur warned that this financial mismanagement is leading the state towards economic bankruptcy.
