Mandi, March 12: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur criticized the state government for delaying Panchayat elections, calling the move “anti-development” and harmful for rural governance.
During his visit to Chhatri in the Seraj constituency, Thakur alleged that if elections had been conducted on time, development works in rural areas would have progressed at a faster pace. He claimed that even nine months after the natural disaster, several areas still face damaged roads, disrupted drinking water schemes and electricity infrastructure issues.
Thakur also accused the government of neglecting development in rural regions despite assistance from the Centre and said the delay in local body elections has affected grassroots governance and reconstruction efforts.
While attending the annual prize distribution ceremony of Chhatri College, Thakur expressed concern over the reported reduction of trades in the local ITI and alleged attempts to close the college. He said the institution was established to ensure students from remote areas could access higher education locally.
He also announced an incentive of ₹51,000 for students who presented cultural performances at the event and held an organisational meeting with BJP workers during his visit.
