Mandi/Kullu: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur visited the landslide-hit Jangambagh area of Sundernagar where seven people lost their lives. Accompanied by local MLAs, he met the affected families, expressed condolences, and criticized the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government for its “casual approach” to disaster management.
Thakur alleged that despite IMD warnings, the government allowed the Manimahesh Yatra to continue, leaving several pilgrims stranded due to flash floods and cloudbursts. He said lack of coordination between the administration and government agencies worsened the crisis, leading to preventable deaths.
While acknowledging the efforts of NDRF and the Air Force in saving lives, Thakur stressed that poor planning at the state level is putting citizens at risk. He assured that BJP workers are actively assisting victims across the state.
On Thursday, Thakur also played a crucial role in ensuring timely treatment for a 32-year-old landslide victim, Abhinav Sankhyan, who suffered serious head injuries in Kullu. Responding to a plea from the victim’s relative, Thakur coordinated with Kullu and Mandi administration, NHAI, and AIIMS Bilaspur. A green corridor was created despite multiple landslides and heavy rains, enabling Abhinav’s safe transfer to AIIMS Bilaspur where he is now undergoing treatment.
Thakur wished speedy recovery to the injured and urged the government to take disaster preparedness seriously to prevent further tragedies.
