The Kalka-Shimla Railway, renowned for its heritage charm, is stepping up its game by not only providing a comfortable journey but also focusing on the health and well-being of its passengers. A collaboration between the Indian Railway Board and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been initiated to establish ‘Eat Right Stations’ on the historic line.

In the first phase of transforming three stations along the Nerogauge Kalka-Shimla Rail Line into ‘Eat Right Stations,’ major steps are being taken. These stations include Baddog, Solan, and Kandaghat. The initiative aims to offer passengers high-quality and nutritious food items at the station cafeterias, adhering to FSSAI standards. Notably, the Kalka-Shimla Railway had not featured any ‘Eat Right Stations’ until now.

This initiative extends to all visitors, including tourists, encouraging them to embrace healthier eating choices. Along with the culinary offerings, the process of preparing and selling food items at the station will also follow FSSAI regulations. Moreover, every six months, samples of food items will be tested to ensure quality, and a laboratory will verify their adherence to standards. The certification of ‘Eat Right Stations’ will be granted only after auditing all three stations.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken the initiative to convert railway stations into ‘Eat Right Stations.’ Recently, the railway board received letters for the audit of the three stations. Collaborating with the board’s team, work will soon commence on this endeavor. – Arun Sharma, Assistant Commissioner, District Food Safety Department, Solan.
