1 min read

At the ongoing Indian Numismatic Fair hosted at Shimla’s Gaiety Theatre, antique coins that are thousands of years old have become a center of attraction for visitors. These ancient coins shed light on the currency systems during the era of princely states. Visitors are captivated by the coins’ unique and intricate designs, crafted without the use of machines. Many attendees take the opportunity to learn about the historical significance of these coins from the stall operators.

In the exhibition held at Gaiety Theatre, the designs of coins from the Satavahana and Panchamark series have garnered significant appreciation. The Satavahana coins are engraved on glass and copper, featuring various symbols such as bull, elephant, lion, horse, mountain, ship, swastika, lotus, tri-ratna, and the Ujjain symbol (four dots connected with a cross).

Stall operator Prem Piyush Kumar revealed that these coins were discovered by sand diggers near the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. They date back to approximately 1000 to 1200 years, with the Panchamark coins used during the Maurya period. Information about these coins is documented in Kautilya’s Arthashastra, and they were created by striking metal fragments with tools.

Additionally, the exhibition showcases Kushana coins and coins from the Sikh era, providing insight into the history of these regions. The primary objective of the exhibition is to raise awareness among the youth about India’s ancient currencies.
