International Day for Biological Diversity celebrated

The Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni,  today celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity at the university campus.

Under the theme ‘Be Part of the Plan’, echoing the urgent call for collective action to combat biodiversity loss and support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the commemoration underscored the imperative for a concerted effort in safeguarding our planet’s rich tapestry of life. Originating from a pivotal United Nations General Assembly decision in 2000, the International Day for Biological Diversity serves as a beacon for promoting the sustainable preservation and utilization of Earth’s diverse ecosystems.

In observance of this significant day, the department orchestrated a series of engaging activities, including Painting, Slogan and Quiz competitions. These initiatives were designed not only to foster awareness about biodiversity’s vital importance but also to inspire proactive engagement in its conservation.

This celebratory occasion served as a platform for students and faculty alike to showcase their talents while deepening their understanding of biodiversity’s pivotal role in upholding ecological equilibrium and advancing sustainable development. Dr CL Thakur, Dean College of Forestry, graced the event as the Chief Guest, emphasizing the significance of unified conservation efforts in preserving Biological Diversity. Dr Thakur highlighted the day’s essence as an opportunity to marvel at the wonders of our natural world and recommit to its protection, while also presenting prizes to the competition winners.

Dr. D.R. Bhardwaj, Professor and Head of the Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry, alongside Dr. Rohit Bhisht, Dr. Praveen Kumar, Coordinator of the Event, Dr. Rajeev Dhiman, Dr. Shriya Gupta, Dr. Dhirender Kumar, and the enthusiastic participation of students from the department, collectively contributed to the success of the programme.
