Shimla, March 11

Over the weekend, Bishop Cotton School (BCS) facilitated two dynamic workshops aimed at providing holistic learning experiences for its students. The workshops, centered around junior robotics and senior sustainability, were designed to instill practical skills and foster a deeper understanding of emerging technologies and global challenges.

Junior Robotics Workshop:

Lucky junior Cottonians were treated to an engaging workshop right at their school premises on Saturday, March 9th. Led by enthusiastic instructors, the workshop provided an insightful introduction to robotics and augmented reality (AR) technology.

Students from the junior and middle school sections were captivated by demonstrations showcasing the mechanics behind robots, including how they are constructed and programmed to perform various tasks. Discussions revolved around the principles of robot programming, encompassing actions such as speaking, lifting, moving, and turning to execute simple instructions.

Excitingly, BCS announced plans to establish its own Stem Lab, empowering Bishop Cotton boys to design and code their own robots within an integrated learning environment. This initiative aims to synergize technology, curriculum, and assessment methodologies to offer hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Sustainability Superheroes – BCS Sustainability Workshop:

On Sunday, March 10th, senior Cottonians embraced their role as “sustainability superheroes” during an enlightening workshop led by Ms. Subuhi Safvi. The workshop, held in collaboration with LOHUM (Global Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Company), focused on climate change awareness and planet sustainability.

Ms. Safvi kickstarted the session with an interactive game, encouraging students to mimic the sounds of their favorite animals. This energizing activity aimed to underscore the importance of biodiversity and the interconnectedness of ecosystems in the context of climate change.

The workshop emphasized active participation and engagement, with students rewarded for correct answers and encouraged to partake in physical exercises illustrating the impact of climate change on human lives. Through dynamic discussions, students gained insights into the distinction between climate and weather, as well as practical steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Subuhi Safvi expressed admiration for the students’ knowledge and enthusiasm, highlighting the significance of equipping them with actionable insights to drive positive change. Recognizing the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future, she underscored the importance of inclusive voices and collective action towards sustainability.

Reflecting on the workshop, a student remarked on the effectiveness of simplifying complex subjects through interactive and enjoyable activities.

Empowering Future Leaders:

Bishop Cotton School, steeped in rich history and tradition since its founding in 1859, continues to nurture generations of leaders across diverse fields. The institution’s commitment to holistic education is evident through initiatives like the robotics and sustainability workshops, which empower students to become conscientious global citizens equipped to address the challenges of tomorrow.
