Abhivyakti with the support of Department of Language & Culture, HP, presents the Impressions & Expressions – HC Rai Memorial ArtFest, scheduled from 4th to 10th October 2024 at Shimla’s historic Gaiety Theatre Complex, which promises to be an extraordinary celebration of art and creativity. Building on the success of the previous year’s HC Rai Centenary ArtFest – 2023, this year’s festival aims to bring together veteran artists, professors, and young talents to create a unique artistic experience for all. This year, the festival will feature the works of several esteemed artists, including Shri Rai, Prof. Him Chatterjee, Prof. Ranjan Mallik, Kewal Krishna Kamra and Jagjit Singh (both alumni of the first Government Arts College of Himachal), Aditya Singh Thakur and Danny Balbir Singh.

Sh HC Rai, a highly respected figure in the Indian art community, holds a significant place in Himachal’s cultural history. As the founding principal of Himachal’s first Government Art College in Nahan, his work, spanning oil and watercolour landscapes, portraits, miniatures, and pastels, continues to inspire generations of artists. The 2023 festival showcased 350 of his works and attracted art enthusiasts from across the globe, celebrating his legacy through exhibitions, live workshops, and public painting sessions. The workshops and live painting sessions on Mall Road and The Ridge were especially appreciated by both locals and tourists, reinforcing the impact of art in bringing communities together.

This year’s edition of the ArtFest, led by Amala Rai, daughter of Sh HC Rai, will feature a range of artists, including alumni of the Government Art College, HP, along with emerging and well-established artists. The festival will continue the tradition of inter-generational collaboration, showcasing a diverse range of art styles, mediums, and perspectives. Highlights of the festival include live sketching and portrait making sessions, all aimed at fostering a deeper connection between the artists and the public.

The ArtFest’s expansion is a reflection of its growing cultural and economic impact. In the future, the organizing committee, spearheaded by Amala Rai, hopes to extend the event to national and international levels, establishing it as a premier cultural platform. The festival is committed to creating an economically viable market for participating artists and supporting the local community through cultural tourism.

The Impressions & Expressions – HC Rai Memorial ArtFest is organized in collaboration with the Department of Language & Culture, Himachal Pradesh, which has provided invaluable support in bringing this artistic vision to life. The festival exemplifies how art not only enriches individual lives but also strengthens community bonds by offering a space for shared cultural experiences.

We look forward to welcoming all art enthusiasts and collectors, both young and old, to this vibrant celebration of creativity, where the power of art continues to transcend boundaries and bridge generations.
