IIT Mandi: Action Taken Against 72 Students for Ragging

Mandi, Sept. 06 – An incident of ragging has come to light at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi. Following a complaint, the IIT administration has taken disciplinary action against 72 students in connection with this incident. Ten of these students have been suspended for six months, and the hostel facilities have been vacated for them. The incident occurred last month during a meet-and-greet session for first-year students at IIT Mandi, where junior students were subjected to ragging, including being made to imitate a chicken.
After the victims reported the incident, an anti-ragging cell at IIT Mandi initiated an investigation. After finding some students guilty of ragging, the institute’s administration took action against 72 students. Notably, three office bearers of the student organization at IIT Mandi are among those involved in this ragging incident.
In a press release, the IIT Mandi administration acknowledged the incident of ragging on the campus. They discovered that some students were involved in ragging first-year students during a meet-and-greet event. As penalties, some students were fined Rs 15,000 and were required to perform 20 hours of community service, some were fined Rs 20,000 and required to perform 40 hours of community service, and others were fined Rs 25,000 and required to perform 60 hours of community service. Additionally, ten students have been suspended from academic and hostel facilities until December 2023.
