IGMC Shimla Organises HIV/AIDS Awareness & Sensitisation Programme for MBBS Final-Year Interns

Shimla: The Department of Community Medicine at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla organised an HIV/AIDS awareness and sensitisation programme for MBBS final-year interns.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Principal Dr. Sita Thakur and Head of Department Dr. Anmol Gupta, with support from District Medical Officer Dr. Yashpal Ranta and District AIDS Programme Officer Dr. Tehseen. The session was led by Assistant Professor Dr. Gopal Ashish Sharma.

During the interactive session, Dr. Sharma sensitised interns about the HIV/AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017, highlighting key provisions related to prevention, treatment, and protection of the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. He emphasised that the Act ensures universal access to testing and treatment, prohibits discrimination in workplaces, educational and healthcare institutions, and mandates grievance redressal mechanisms. Legal provisions, including penalties for violations, were also discussed.

The session also covered the role of ombudsman and institutional authorities in addressing complaints and ensuring compliance with the Act. Emphasis was laid on eliminating stigma and ensuring equal rights and dignity for affected individuals.

The programme was successfully conducted with the support of faculty members and residents of the department, making it an informative and impactful learning experience for the interns.
