Special Train Introduced for Shimla-Solan Route
Shimla, August 09: The “Hill Queen” Shimla, a popular destination for tourists, has the Kalka-Shimla Railway Track as a major attraction. The chugging train passing through the numerous small and large tunnels, totaling 103, fills tourists with excitement as they witness the scenic beauty. However, these days, the track lies empty. There’s good news, though, as the railway authorities have decided to operate a special train between Solan and Shimla.
Currently, the Kalka-Shimla Railway Track, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is completely closed. The announcement to close it was made on July 9th. Subsequently, due to recurrent landslides, it was decided to keep it shut for 7 more days.
A team inspecting the track amidst the ongoing rain and landslide situation has imposed a halt on its operation until August 27th. This means that for 42 days, no wheels will traverse the rail route. Officials have found debris and fallen trees in various places along the track, causing substantial damage. An engineering team has been deployed to assess the affected sections.
However, to ensure passenger convenience, the railway has introduced a special train running between Shimla and Solan. Initially scheduled to depart Shimla at 8:25 AM, there were concerns about the early timing. Consequently, the departure time has been adjusted to 9:25 AM. From Solan, the train will depart at 1:30 PM. Meanwhile, bookings for Kalka-Shimla trains have been temporarily suspended. Once the situation is under control, the track restoration work will commence.
