On Wednesday, a major ruckus unfolded outside the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly as legislators engaged in cross-voting, escalating tensions among supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC). The situation turned chaotic as barricades were broken, and verbal altercations ensued between the opposing factions, despite a significant police presence.
A total of 2,500 police personnel were deployed in and around the assembly to maintain order. Despite efforts, supporters managed to breach barricades, creating a tense atmosphere. The nine Congress MLAs involved in cross-voting were surrounded by Congress supporters, demanding their removal from the premises. Despite the deployment of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the MLAs were eventually escorted into the assembly amid continued chaos.
Inside the assembly, there was a heated confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition. BJP leaders, including Jai Ram Thakur and senior BJP MLA Vipin Singh Parmar, welcomed the MLAs who crossed voted.
Meanwhile, angry legislators reportedly reached out to former Congress president Sonia Gandhi to express their grievances. Allegedly, during the conversation, they voiced their dissatisfaction and frustration with the party’s internal affairs.
With 15 BJP legislators facing suspension due to their behavior in the assembly, the situation escalated as both parties traded accusations. The opposition, led by Congress leader Jagat Singh Negi, walked out before the budget could be passed.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu addressed the situation, promising to expose the conspiracy behind the government’s alleged destabilization. He expressed confidence in his government’s stability, asserting that democracy and truth would prevail.
Despite the political turmoil, the budget was eventually passed, and the Chief Minister assured that appropriate action would be taken against those involved in disrupting the proceedings. The political developments in Himachal Pradesh have drawn attention, and the repercussions of this cross-voting incident are likely to unfold in the coming days.
