HPNLU Hosts E-Colloquium on Global Tariff Policies and Legal Challenge

Shimla, May 1, 2025 – The Centre for Business Law and Economics at Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, organized a thought-provoking e-Colloquium on “Reciprocal Tariff and the Imposition of New Economic Order: Issues, Concerns and Legal Challenges.”
Held on May 1, 2025, the event brought together eminent experts and enthusiastic students to examine the legal and economic ramifications of shifting global trade policies, especially in light of recent developments in U.S. tariff regulations. Prof. Dr. T.S. Somashekhar (NLSIU, Bangalore) and Dr. Bipin Kumar (NLU, Jodhpur) provided critical insights into the relevance of reciprocal tariffs and the vulnerabilities faced by the Global South within WTO frameworks.
The session began with a welcome address by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Saxena, followed by a student-led introduction by Anushka, Varin, and Shaurya. The speakers explored core issues surrounding global trade law, GATT principles, and developing economies’ challenges in adapting to a new economic order. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Prof. Girjesh Shukla, Director of the Centre.
