The Himachal Pradesh government’s commitment to ensuring that no child is deprived of higher education due to financial limitations is taking firm shape through the Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Student Loan Scheme. Launched in 2023 under the vision of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the scheme has emerged as a beacon of hope for countless young aspirants determined to excel academically.
What makes this initiative truly transformative is its inclusivity. Recognizing the growing financial needs of students, the state has increased the annual family income eligibility limit from ₹4 lakh to ₹12 lakh—significantly expanding the scheme’s reach. Under the programme, students can avail education loans up to ₹20 lakh at just 1% interestmoney, covering tuition fees, hostel expenses, meals, and other academic essentials.
Anil Kumar, Deputy Director of Higher Education in Una, says the scheme is designed to empower Himachal’s youth by providing them the financial security they need to pursue disciplines ranging from medicine and law to pharmacy, nursing, engineering, ITI, polytechnic studies, and even PhD programmes. “The goal is to cultivate a generation equipped with knowledge, skill, and research excellence,” he adds.
Eligibility requires Himachali domicile and at least 60% marks in the previous class, with an upper age limit of 28 years. The scheme’s fully digital application process ensures transparency and speed—verification and approval take just two working days. For those opting for the corpus fund route, the first instalment is transferred directly to the institution’s bank account within 24 hours.
Deputy Commissioner Jatin Lal affirms that the district administration, through the education department, is committed to ensuring the scheme’s smooth implementation. “We are aligned with the Chief Minister’s vision to deliver timely support to every deserving student,” he says.
By expanding opportunity and removing financial hurdles, the Dr. Y.S. Parmar Student Loan Scheme is not just funding education—it is fueling ambition, dignity, and hope across Himachal Pradesh.
