In a significant policy shift, the Himachal Pradesh government has withdrawn electricity subsidies for gazetted officers, effective January 1, 2025. Along with this, the 125-unit free electricity benefit that these employees previously enjoyed has also been revoked. As a result, from February onwards, their electricity bills will reflect full tariffs without any subsidy.

This decision is part of the government’s effort to restore the financial stability of the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board. While the board is still gathering complete data on the number of affected consumers, preliminary figures indicate that over 1,000 individuals have voluntarily opted out of the subsidy following an appeal by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

The policy change is not limited to state employees. Military and paramilitary officers posted in Himachal Pradesh will also no longer receive subsidized electricity in their government residences. This move has raised concerns among the armed forces community, as it affects officers stationed in key areas like Shimla and other cantonments across the state.

Additionally, the withdrawal of subsidies extends to several other categories of employees and pensioners, including:
– Group A & B employees and pensioners of the state government (previously classified as Category I & II)
– Employees of central government boards, corporations, PSUs, and universities residing in Himachal Pradesh
– Military and paramilitary personnel and pensioners falling under similar categories

Alongside this measure, the government has also mandated that all electricity consumers complete their e-KYC by February 15, 2025. Failure to do so will result in the loss of the 125-unit free electricity benefit per meter, further tightening regulations on power consumption in the state.

This policy change marks a decisive step by the government to reduce financial burdens on the state electricity board. However, it has also sparked discussions among affected employees and military officials, who now face increased household expenses due to the sudden removal of subsidies.
