Shimla, Sept 02
Continuous heavy rains and landslides have thrown life out of gear in Himachal Pradesh. As of Tuesday morning, six national highways and 1311 roads remain blocked, severely affecting connectivity. Power and water supply have also been disrupted with 3263 electricity transformers and 858 water schemes damaged.
Tragically, two women lost their lives in separate landslide incidents in Solan and Kullu districts, while several houses across Chamba, Mandi, Solan, and Kinnaur face imminent danger due to collapsing walls, cracks, and mudslides. At Ani in Kullu, a two-storey house collapsed near the bus stand, echoing the devastation of 2022 when eight houses in the same area were destroyed.
IMD has issued a red alert for Kangra, Chamba, and Kullu, and orange alerts for Mandi, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur. With rivers flowing above danger levels and highways blocked, schools across 12 districts have been ordered shut for safety, with teachers directed to conduct online classes.
Monsoon 2025 has already caused a staggering property loss of ₹3,15,808 lakh and claimed 327 lives, while over 4600 houses, shops, and cowsheds have been damaged. Several major bridges and roads, including parts of the Kalka-Shimla Highway and the Manali-Leh route, remain closed due to landslides and flooding, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.
