Himsona tomatoes from Solan, Himachal Pradesh, were sold at Rs 171 per kilogram in the vegetable market on Monday. A crate of 25 kilograms fetched an impressive price of Rs 4,275, setting a new record. Additionally, other tomato crates were sold for prices ranging up to Rs 3,650. This new record surpasses last week’s highest price of Rs 125 per kilogram for tomatoes in the Solan market. The rising prices have brought smiles to the faces of the farmers. Market experts believe that tomato prices may continue to rise in the coming days.

As per the available information, the arrival of tomatoes in the Solan market has increased. Approximately 5,000 to 6,000 crates are reaching the market daily. The total business generated from tomatoes has already reached Rs 30.49 crores. On Monday alone, around 5,500 crates were delivered to the vegetable market, resulting in a substantial business turnover. Tomatoes are also arriving from Sirmaur, Basal, Jaunaji, Kandaghat, Sairi, and Naggal in addition to Solan. These tomatoes are being sent to markets in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana from the Solan Agricultural Produce Market Committee.

It’s noteworthy that this year’s tomato trade has witnessed a four-fold increase compared to the previous year. Despite lower tomato arrivals, the total business has reached a remarkable Rs 30,49,12,800. By this time last year, around 2,04,569 crates had reached the market, resulting in a business turnover of only Rs 7,15,99,150.

Dr. Ravi Sharma, Secretary of the Mandi Samiti in Solan, revealed that this year, there is a shortage of tomatoes in other states as well, including Himachal Pradesh. Excessive rainfall has damaged most crops, leading to an increased demand for tomatoes. The prices of tomatoes reached a record Rs 1,250, Rs 3,650, and Rs 4,275 per crate based on their respective grades on Monday. Market experts predict that tomato prices are likely to remain stable in the upcoming days.
