Shimla, March 10, 2024: The admission process for Ph.D. programs at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is set to begin in March, shifting from the traditional December timeline. HPU will now incorporate a Research Aptitude Test, aligning with the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC), to streamline the selection process.
In adherence to the UGC rules, a 12-point Research Aptitude Test will be administered to Ph.D. aspirants. Following the written examination, candidates will undergo an interview process, including a presentation on their chosen research topic.
The Research Aptitude Test will contribute 12 points to the candidate’s overall score. For the first time, HPU is implementing this system in the current academic session. The university will soon announce the availability of Ph.D. seats in its 25 departments, initiating the admission process.
Under the new system, the admission process for Ph.D. will include an 80-point written examination, with a maximum of 10% weight given to JRF/NET. For JRF/NET, up to eight points will be considered, while an additional maximum of four points will be allotted for M.Phil/SET. The remaining 12 points will be based on the research aptitude test.
To ensure fairness and avoid any bias in the Research Aptitude Test, each department at HPU will constitute a committee chaired by the Head of the Department. In departments where there is no senior professor, the Dean will serve on the committee. This measure aims to uphold the integrity of the committee and its accountability.
Himachal Pradesh University conducts Ph.D. admissions twice a year, with direct admissions for candidates who have cleared the JRF and national-level fellowships in July, and entrance examinations in December. However, due to disruptions caused by the pandemic, the December admission process has been rescheduled to March this year.
