Himachal Pradesh Initiates Satellite-Based Mapping to Tackle Plastic Waste Crisis
1 min readShimla, September 25:To ensure cleanliness and address the issue of accumulated waste in Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (Himkost) and the Aryabhata Geo-informatics and Space Application Centre (AGISAC) branch have conducted Geographic Information System (GIS) based mapping of 70 old waste sites across the state using satellite imagery.
These sites were identified based on plastic waste markers and geographical coordinates. The number of identified locations per district is as follows: Bilaspur (7), Chamba (5), Hamirpur (9), Kangra (9), Kullu (4), Mandi (7), Shimla (17), Sirmaur (3), Solan (4), and Una (5). Of the 70 locations, 43 are in rural areas.
The list of marked sites has been shared with the respective Block Development Officers (BDOs), and they have been instructed to take necessary steps to remove plastic and old waste from these sites before October 2, 2023. Special campaigns for cleanliness were conducted in these blocks, and after the removal of plastic waste from these sites, signboards reading “Do not litter” will be installed. Additionally, consideration will be given to installing CCTV cameras at these locations.
This initiative aims to address the issue of plastic waste and accumulated waste in Himachal Pradesh, promoting environmental sustainability and cleanliness.
