1 min readShimla, September 12, 2024 – During a joint press conference addressing recent protests by local residents and right-wing activists, including Hindu Jagran Manch, against an unauthorized mosque structure in Sanjauli, Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh announced a resolution. The mosque committee, led by Mohammed Latif and Maulvi Shezaad, has agreed to either seal or demolish the unauthorized part of the structure, pending municipal approval, and to comply with court directions.
The ministers emphasized Himachal’s commitment to maintaining peace and communal harmony, countering attempts to portray the issue as communal. They noted that the controversial construction occurred during the COVID period under the BJP government, which had previously funded the mosque.
The government plans to introduce new policies for street vendors and hawkers, and will also scrutinize the credentials of migrants and workers. The ministers praised the mosque committee’s voluntary decision to address the dispute and urged residents to remain patient and maintain harmony until the final court decision. They also criticized the previous BJP administration for allowing the unauthorized construction and assured that any involved municipal officials would be investigated.
