Shimla, September 20: APG Shimla University, in association with Max Hospital Mohali, organized a one-day heart health awareness workshop at the university auditorium. The workshop, held under the aegis of the School of Allied and Health Care Sciences, aimed to educate students and faculty on the rising incidence of heart diseases, especially among the younger population, and how to prevent them.

Dr. Deepak Puri, a renowned cardiologist and ‘Pride of Nation’ awardee, was the keynote speaker. He, along with a team of medical experts, addressed critical issues such as the causes of heart diseases, the impact of mental stress, and the alarming rise in heart-related deaths among young adults. Dr. Puri highlighted the importance of early detection and prevention, stressing the need for regular medical checkups and adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The workshop opened with a welcome by APG Shimla University’s Chancellor, Engineer Suman Vikrant, who, along with Pro-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ramesh Chauhan and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. R.S. Chauhan, honored Dr. Puri with a Himachali cap and shawl as a token of appreciation.

Dr. Puri also addressed the genetic predisposition to heart conditions, explaining that some heart diseases may begin even before birth due to the consumption of alcohol or medications by expecting mothers. He discussed the importance of stress management in today’s fast-paced lifestyle, explaining how chronic stress is contributing to a rise in heart diseases. The cardiologist pointed out that India has one of the highest rates of heart disease globally due to unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, and the prevalence of stress.

He further noted that after the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in heart-related complications, especially among young individuals. He advised avoiding excessive consumption of fast food, oily, and greasy food to reduce the risk of heart diseases.

In the second session, students and faculty participated in an interactive Q&A session where Dr. Puri shared practical health tips, answered queries about heart health, and provided advice on stress management techniques. He emphasized the importance of asking doctors the right questions about one’s health and maintaining a regular exercise routine and balanced diet.
