Chandigarh/ Shimla, Aug 01, 2025:
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed Bollywood actress and Himachal Pradesh MP Kangana Ranaut’s plea seeking to quash defamation proceedings against her in a Bhatinda court. The case dates back to 2021, when Kangana had posted a controversial tweet during the farmers’ protest, alleging that elderly protester Mahinder Kaur had joined the agitation in exchange for money.
The tweet sparked nationwide criticism, with 87-year-old Mahinder Kaur from Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bhatinda voicing deep resentment, accusing Kangana of insulting her dignity and farmers’ struggle. Following public outrage, a defamation suit was filed on January 4, 2021, and Kangana was later summoned by the Bhatinda court.
While Kangana moved the High Court to quash the trial, the bench rejected her petition. The matter will now proceed in the Bhatinda district court, though Kangana may still approach the Supreme Court.
The issue resurfaced in June 2024, when CISF constable Kulwinder Kaur allegedly slapped Kangana at Chandigarh Airport, citing emotional distress caused by Kangana’s remarks on women in the farmers’ protest, including her own mother.
