Gram Panchayat imposes blanket ban on Beer during marriages: Resolution

Shimla, July 6 – Gram Panchayat Keylong under Lahaul subdivision of Lahaul Spiti district imposed a blanket ban on the use of Beer during marriage, and violators were slapped with fines of up to Rs 5000.
According to a resolution passed by the Gram Sabha of Gram Panchayat Keylong, it was decided in the meeting held on July 2, 2023, that during marriage, Beer would be completely banned. If anyone is found violating this order of the Gram Sabha, a penalty of Rs 5,000 will be recovered by the Panchayat. The decision was taken during the meeting after receiving information about the supply of inferior-quality Beer. A similar decision was also taken by the same Gram Sabha last year.
During the meeting, two other resolutions were also passed under which the Gram Panchayat amended the local customary rule, fixing the amount of rituals, including Rs 200 for Dagnag, Rs 1000 for Jara, and Rs 1500 for Dohaid.
In another resolution, it was also decided mutually that in case of expressing condolence on the death of any person, gram panchayat residents should visit such greaved family till last date and if any person could not visit till the last day of expressing condolence they could visit Gipuch Jurg ( on 49 day). After that no family members would attend the condolence in the village.
Villagers of Tribal districts make their own bylaws on the basis of their customary law practices in Lahaul Spiti, Kinnuar and Panti and Bharmour subdivision of Chamba district.
