Government hikes monthly incentive for cattle under Gaupal Yojana

Animal Husbandry and Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar stated that the state government had taken a decision to increase the monthly incentive under the Gaupal Yojana, implemented through the Gau Sewa Aayog, from Rs. 700 to Rs. 1,200 per cattle. This enhanced amount would be provided to the registered Gau-Sadans (cow shelters) starting August, 2025.
The Minister was presiding over the 6th meeting of the Himachal Pradesh Gau-Sadans Aayog, here today in which detailed discussion on the establishment, functioning and rehabilitation of the abandoned cattle in cow shelters across the state was held during the meeting.
There are 276 Gau-Sadans and Gau-Abhyaranyas (cow sanctuaries) across the State providing shelter to 21,306 abandoned cattle. The process of establishing new Gau-Sadans and Gau-Abhayaranya is underway in the Kangra, Hamirpur and Una districts.
The Aayog expressed gratitude to the State Government for increasing the incentive amount under the Gaupal Yojana. It was also decided to set up biogas plants in cow shelters and sanctuaries with the support of the Agriculture Department.
Chander Kumar directed the Animal Husbandry department to ensure regular veterinary care and proper record-keeping in all Gau-Sadans and Gau-Abhayaranya. He also instructed the Police department to take necessary action in cases of cattle smuggling and the illegal abandonment of animals from neighbouring states.
It was further decided that the Gau-Sewa Aayog in collaboration with the Language and Culture Department, would draft a policy for the construction and operation of cow shelters and sanctuaries, with a special focus on encouraging community participation.
