GIPHI’s tobacco cessation training workshop hosted at Shoolini Univ

Shoolini University, in collaboration with the Global Initiative for Public Health and Innovation (GIPHI), conducted a two-day online training workshop aimed at equipping students with essential skills in tobacco cessation counselling.
The workshop, held for leveraging digital health technology for a smoke-free future, witnessed participation from over 100 students across various departments.
The training introduced participants to the START App (Stop Tobacco with Assistance and Recover Today), an innovative digital solution for tackling tobacco addiction. The event was organised in association with YouWeCan and certified by the Edward and Cynthia Institute of Public Health.
The sessions were led by Dr. Sumedha Kushwaha, CEO of GIPHI, a PhD Scholar at the University of Toronto, and Research Assistant at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH). Dr. Kushwaha, who also founded Aim to Terminate Tobacco and Cancer (ATTAC) and the India International Development Alliance, was joined by her dedicated Team GIPHI in delivering impactful training.
The workshop focused on evidence-based strategies for tobacco cessation counselling, empowering participants with practical knowledge to support individuals in quitting tobacco. Students underwent hands-on training on the START App, learning to implement technology-driven interventions in public health initiatives.
Mrs. Poonam Nanda, Director of Sustainability and Community Engagement  at Shoolini University, and Dr. Nitika Thakur, Assistant Professor at the university supported the event . Student coordinators also played a vital role in ensuring the smooth execution of the programme.
Mrs. Nanda said that the training initiative reflects Shoolini University’s commitment to empower students with the tools and knowledge to address critical public health issues.
