Fortis Cancer Institute Shines Hope for Patients Battling Complex Cancers
2 min readShimla, March 15, : The Fortis Cancer Institute in Mohali has ushered in a revolutionary era in cancer treatment, achieving successful outcomes for numerous patients through state-of-the-art technology. From colon to ovarian, liver, and colorectal cancers, the institute has demonstrated remarkable success in treating patients afflicted with various forms of the disease.
In a recent case, under the guidance of Dr. Jitendar Rohila, Consultant in Surgical Oncology and Robotic-aided Surgery at Fortis Hospital Mohali, a team of doctors successfully treated an 80-year-old woman suffering from advanced colon cancer. Colon cancer, a gastrointestinal tract cancer, can affect the right colon, transverse colon, and left colon. The patient had been experiencing general weakness, anemia, weight loss, difficulty in passing stools, and blood in stools for the past six months. Upon consultation, Dr. Rohila advised a PET-CT scan, revealing a significant mass from the duodenum D2-D3 junction connected to the right side of the colon, indicating advanced (T4) colon cancer. Colonoscopic biopsy confirmed adenocarcinoma, a form of cancer that originates in mucous glands inside organs like the lungs, colon, or even breasts.
The patient underwent radical colectomy (surgical removal of a part or the entire colon), followed by a discussion on the tumor board, where Dr. Rohila proposed a right extended hemicolectomy (removal of the right part of the colon), excision of a part of the small intestine, and removal of a part of the capsule of the right kidney. Post-surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged from the hospital after 14 days. The final pathology report revealed complete removal of the tumor with negative margins. She has since fully recovered and is now cancer-free.
In another case, Dr. Ketan Dang, Consultant in Medical Oncology at Fortis Mohali, successfully treated a 69-year-old woman suffering from liver metastasis (cancer spread from elsewhere in the body to the liver), ovarian, and colorectal cancers. The patient had been experiencing abdominal pain and bleeding from the rectum. Medical examination revealed liver metastasis (stage 4) along with cancers in the ovaries and colon. Further investigations revealed metastasis to the colon and liver, while the ovaries remained unaffected.
The patient underwent targeted therapy along with chemotherapy, specifically designed to target proteins that promote the growth, division, and spread of cancer cells. She tolerated the treatment well, and subsequent PET-CT scan indicated the disappearance of the tumor. Following this, the patient underwent surgery, with post-operative results revealing complete removal of the tumor from the colon, ovaries, and liver.
Dr. Dang commented, “Targeted therapy helps in reducing blood supply to the tumor, causing it to shrink. Targeted therapy has revolutionized cancer treatment.” The success stories from Fortis Cancer Institute underscore the institution’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge treatments and fostering hope for patients battling complex cancers.
